Ambition is a funny thing; it has driven people to do some wonderful things to reach the highest peaks. We all have the desire to chase our dreams and aspirations, but what should you do when your ambitions far surpass your abilities?

This seemed to be the dilemma facing Kirsty Lothian when she set out to produce an opera fully knowing the limitations of her musical abilities. Don’t know how to put together a libretto? Why not cobble one together from discarded elements of a classic novel?

This may seem like laziness to some, but surely if you’re willing to put your all into achieving whatever seemingly ludicrous ambition you have, then that effort must then equal or outweigh the quality of the finished product, right? That’s what they told us at school, to try, to do our best. Kirsty Lothian has, have you? Maybe after seeing ; or The Whale you should ask yourself ‘are you striving to fail or failing to strive’?

Kirsty Lothian is a London-based performer who co-founded Jumbled with Lucy Foster. She works across Live Art and Theatre, and also directs operas.

Robert Foster‘s Bucket Dance comprises of three performers following a series of pre-set conditions within the confines of a small space. Each of the colour coded performers must follow the geometric shape on the floor relating to the colour of their jumpsuit. All the while wearing buckets on their head that block their vision.

Reasonably simple, right? Well yes and no: this apparently simple piece is full of complexity.

When I first heard about this work I thought of Bruce Nauman’s Walking in an Exaggerated Manner around the Perimeter of a Square. The idea of bucket headed figures traveling along lines within a claustrophobic space is very evocative of this piece. Yet upon reading the programme notes, I learn that the work is in fact a ‘parody’ inspired by Oskar Schlemmer's performance work at the Bauhaus, and the ideological failings within Modernism. Simple, yet complex, right?

A key part of this piece is that as each performer moves they sometimes drift wildly off course. When they collide with each other or the wall, it draws associations with human behavior and how we can very quickly become accustomed to our own personal set of rules and conditions and follow them beyond the point of absurdity.   Its only when we collide with the wall of someone else’s absurd rules that we take the time to review our trajectory.

We are incredibly lucky to host the first meeting of Liverpool Synchronised Swim Team, comprised as it is of plucky Bristolian Jasmine Loveys! She will be bravely foregoing any of the usual trappings of the sport, such as team members or water. Cheer for our heroine as Loveys sacrifices her living room for her ambitions of aquatic locomotion. On this journey of discovery Loveys will prove you don’t have to be fully equipped in every department in order to fulfil your dreams of watery happiness! Thrill as she transforms the Sandon Room into a shimmering underwater place. Gasp at the glamour which will rival the Million Dollar Mermaid herself: Esther Williams. Most of all be inspired by this journey of one woman who fought against the odds to triumph against the mundane, to be all she could be and so much more!  Nose plugs optional.

Over the last hundred or so years we have developed theories and formula which describe and predict the nature and motion of the universe. If we can create mathematics to help us understand the beating heart of a star then it follows that you could apply the same methods to our own beating hearts? I mean You + Me = Love it’s a simple equation, right?

So meeting ‘The One’ is simply a numbers game? If so all you need to do is understand the data in order to get what you desire. Part performer part Open University lecturer, Allan Taylor has used his own relationship experiences to crunch the numbers and discover the system which will guide us all to love.

The show reflects not only a need in us all to create a controllable model of the world, but it also shows us that these models we seek to create are fundamentally flawed as they rely on the most unpredictable elements of human desire.

Ira Brand presents a work about fear. What does it mean to be afraid? How can fear be galvanising as well as debilitating? And can being scared ever be a good thing?

This work in progress piece has been developed at Camden People’s Theatre and is an exploration of fear as the most fundamental of human emotions. The piece draws on autobiographical material starting from a relationship break up, to ask why human beings choose to put themselves in situations where their vulnerability is exposed.

Ira Brand is a writer producer and performance maker who works as a core member of contemporary devised performance groups Tinned Fingers and Antique Women. This is her first full length solo project as an artist.

We’ve all done things we’d like to forget, or harbour memories of people or moments that become painful, memories we can’t eradicate.  This is not a healthy way to live; surely we’d be better off getting rid of them? How can that be done? If you had the opportunity to rid yourself of these experiences would you?

Amy Lord has been investigating the puzzle which is the human experience. With Funeral she is offering you the chance to take part in an experiment -to see if we are really capable of letting go, through the recognised ritual of a Funeral. This intimate one-on- one piece invites you to create a totem of that moment of heartache or regret in order to lay it to rest. Through this Amy Lord is involving us in her experiments to create a system which will allow us to gain the power over these experiences, and move into the new and unknown without fear.

A HUNT

Project Description.

The performance for Poolside event will be a vocal sound intervention with 5 female performers in the courtyard space at Bluecoat. Performers will be carrying bags with boom boxes inside playing a pre-recorded sound work. This sound piece is an edited work from documentation of the 'A Hunt,’ which is a public vocal performance carried out in the streets of Soho, London.

This work is part of the ongoing performance  'A Hunt', which has generated several works, including live performances, audio and video works. The name "Soho" derives from an old English hunting call, an adaption of 'Seeho' which in old hunting lingo means 'seen a hare'. In 'A hunt', six female performers re-enact a hunt, communicating with their voices alone and the semi-linguistic sounds of ancient hunting calls. I have transcribed traditional beagle and fox hunting calls and staged a contemporary hunt with six female vocalists. The performers use this human/animal hybrid language to hunt and find several references to foxes such as the '20th Century Fox building in Soho square.  A sound arrangement develops the hunting calls are juxtaposed with the preexisting urban sound environment and creating an alternative kind of hunting ritual.

Performers in the new piece in Liverpool will layer their own voice with those recorded on the CD. All their movement will be carefully choreographed to create spatial arrangements of sound. A new soundscape and performance will then be created, as the pre-recorded work will merge with live vocalizations and movements.

Tue, 10 May 2011 09:25:00 -0700 'Poolside Emergency Schedule Coming Soon! http://poolside.posterous.com/poolside-emergency-schedule-coming-soon http://poolside.posterous.com/poolside-emergency-schedule-coming-soon

Thank you for checking the 'Poolside Emergency website.

We are extremely excited about the works that will be shown at this year’s ‘Poolside Emergency.

The selection has been a hard task with so many interesting pieces to select from. But we hope you will all enjoy this year’s event, celebrating fresh and exciting new artists and giving them an opportunity to show new work.

At the moment we are still confirming the schedule and we are looking forward to Sat 11 June where visitors can expect to see quirky and exciting interventions, as well as more intimate shows in our performance space.

Last year our artists were fed soup by an eating machine and were responsible for ending over 70 imaginary love affairs from the front seat of a car parked in the Bluecoat courtyard. This year we intend to be even more outlandish; so far confirmed highlights include a crackpot powerpoint presentation by Allan Taylor looking at the mathematical likelihood of falling in love and Dani Abulhawa carpeting the pavement and street furniture around the Bluecoat to demonstrate her skateboarding skills.

So join us on Saturday 11th June for this free festival of the beautiful and the bonkers, the challenging and the witty.
